MCV
The average size of your red blood cells.
If it's high
Larger cells can be linked to low B12 or folate, alcohol, or thyroid issues.
- B12: milk, curd, paneer, eggs, fish, chicken; fortified cereals if vegetarian
- Folate: leafy greens, dals, chickpeas, oranges
If it's low
Smaller cells are often linked to low iron or inherited conditions such as thalassaemia trait.
- Iron-rich foods: spinach and other greens, lentils, rajma, chana, soya, eggs, fish or lean meat
- Vitamin C with meals (amla, guava, orange, lemon) to help absorb iron
A question for your doctor
